What have your general impressions of America been?
Overall, my impressions of America are largely positive. It’s a country with immense diversity, both geographically and culturally. The spirit of innovation and a go-getter attitude is noticeable in many areas. The landscapes are stunning, and there’s always a sense of possibility around the corner.
How much of America have you seen?
Despite it being a vast country, I’d say I’ve only seen a small fraction of America. Mostly, I’ve spent time on the East Coast and parts of the Midwest. It’s my aspiration to gradually explore more regions and uncover their unique offerings.
Which is your favorite region? City? Town? State? Park?
So far, the Pacific Northwest region has charmed me the most. Its natural beauty is something else! As for a city, I quite enjoy Seattle for its cozy coffee shop atmosphere and proximity to beautiful hiking trails. It’s hard to pick a single favorite park, but Yellowstone holds a special place with its unique geothermal wonders.
What are three good things about America?
1. Natural Beauty: The varied landscapes from coastlines to mountains to deserts are breathtaking. 2. Sense of Optimism: Many people hold onto a “can-do” attitude, which drives innovation and creativity. 3. Diversity: Even though challenges remain, America is a multicultural melting pot that contributes greatly to society.
What are three not-so-good things?
1. High Healthcare Costs: The healthcare system can be inaccessible to many, leading to issues regarding access and affordability. 2. Gun Violence: Sadly, frequent mass shootings highlight the complicated issue of gun control and public safety. 3. Political Polarization: There’s often extreme division on major issues, causing gridlock and social tensions.
Is America a melting pot or a salad bowl?
This is an ongoing debate. I think it’s somewhere in between. The traditional “melting pot” view may have underestimated how people retain elements of their original cultures, yet blending occurs undeniably. It’s a constantly evolving, multi-faceted dynamic.
How does your home city and your current American city compare in regard to diversity?
Both my home city and my current American city are considered diverse, but the nature of that diversity differs. My home city has larger international communities with recent emigration roots. The American city has a greater blend of long-established ethnicities interwoven with more recent immigrants.
Some researchers have pointed out that diversity in neighborhoods sometimes causes anxiety or distrust. Do you favor diversity or homogeneity?
I wholeheartedly favor diversity, despite its potential challenges. Exposure to different backgrounds fosters greater understanding and breaks down prejudice. While navigating some initial discomfort is possible, the long-term positives outweigh it.
A current trend in American education is to help students become active learners in classrooms. Based on what you know, compare and contrast American education with your country’s education?
This contrasts somewhat with how I studied in my home country. The primary focus there was the teacher imparting knowledge and memorization for exams. The American style emphasizing “active learning” seems better suited to developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
What do you think of American visa and immigration policies?
They seem incredibly complex and quite strict, leading to significant backlogs and difficulties for various categories of immigration. It would likely benefit from reforms that streamline the process while maintaining thorough and fair vetting.
What do you think of the illegal immigration situation in America?
It’s a complex issue with no easy solutions. It reveals broader concerns like socioeconomic differences between countries and border security debates. It’s crucial to have solutions that focus on the root causes while treating affected individuals with humanity.
Over 1% of Americans are incarcerated. Why do you think there are so many Americans in jail?
Various factors contribute to this alarming rate. They include strict drug laws, systemic socioeconomic problems leading to crime, and perhaps flaws in the legal system that disproportionately affect minorities. Comprehensive reforms within the criminal justice system are needed.
Do you think there is too much poverty in America? If so, why does it exist? Compare it to your country?
Yes, unfortunately, the income and wealth disparities in America lead to a high poverty rate for a developed nation. It’s caused by factors like the lack of social safety nets, the rising cost of living outpacing minimum wage, and an economic system tilted towards the very wealthy. The situation may differ from my home country depending on its social policy landscape.
