West Azerbaijan tourist attractions | West Azerbaijan is one of provinces in Iran. It has various monuments and attractions such as waterfall, mosque, citadel, church, lake, palace, cave, etc. It is located in northwest of Iran. In this article we want to familiarize you with some of these tourist attractions.

Bastam citadel

This citadel was built by one of Urartian kings, dating back to 2800 years ago. This citadel has residential building, castle, water supply network, temple, bazaar, gate and hidden paths. It has strong walls.

Shalmash waterfall

It is located near Sardash (a city in west Azerbaijan). Its height is 50 meters. It is located near a lush and eye-catching jungle. This waterfall consists of three waterfalls, which flows from Little Zab river. It is full of water in spring, so it is a good place for going on a picnic near this beautiful water.

Sahvalan water cave

One of interesting tourist attraction of west Azerbaijan is Sahvalan water cave. It is one of the biggest cave in Iran. It is located in southwest of Mahabad (a city in west Azerbaijan). Because there are many doves in the cave, it is known as “dove nest (or kuneh Kabootar) in local language. Height of cave celling is approximately 50 meters. To reach low part of cave, some stairs are built.

Mahabad Central Mosque

This historical mosque is located at center of Mahabad. It is approximately 1260 meters in area. Because main material used in this mosque is red brick, it is known as “Red Mosque”.

Chapel of Dzordzor

This chapel is located near a dam in Maku (a city in west Azerbaijan). It is in shape of cross with beautiful cut stones. There are four arcs within this chapel. Its dome has four lightwells. It is registered in UNESCO world heritage list.

Baqcheh Jooq Palace

This palace is located near Maku. It is a combination of Iranian and European architecture. Main building of this palace has many rooms and saloons which are decorated with plaster and mirror work on wall. This palace also has a vast garden with old trees such as apricot, quince, cherry, plum, hazelnut, pear, almond and robinia.
