Ubuntu has released their new version on 18th of April. That is Ubuntu 19.04 which is also called as Disco Dingo. Ubuntu has their own naming standards. They are in incremental alphabetical order. As their Previous versions were called as Bionic Beaver(18.04) and Cosmic Cuttlefish(18.10), the next name should be a name with two D’s. So here it is calling as Disco Dingo. This version is a short term version as it is ending in next January like Cosmic Cuttlefish (scheduled to end in this July). So let’s see what are the new features we can see in this new version.

disco dingo with default wallpaper

Ubuntu 19.04 shipped with the latest GNOME 3.32. This version is faster than previous version and it powered by Linux Kernel 5.0 . Disco Dingo is the first version of Ubuntu to use Linux kernel 5.0. This kernel came with some improvements such as support for Raspberry Pi touchscreens, AMD Free-sync .As well as it has a new sound configuration panel making it easier to select your input and output devices.

icons with the new theme

Disco dingo features a new background default wallpaper. As well as yaru theme which came with the Ubuntu 18.0 has improved this time. Now it supports 3rd party applications and it has new icon theme as well. It gives good look than previous versions. Grub menu also improved with some new options such as safe graphic mode. It gives an option to boot with NOMODESET on. This may help to resolve issues on certain graphics cards and allows to install any drivers to system.

In this version Tracker is available by default. Therefore we can keep track of recently used files and this improves searching.Latest versions of Firefox and LibreOffice also available and installed by default. We can see application permission control just like in smart phones. With the help of that we can control which application has access to what resource. Ubuntu has introduced live patching option in this version. With that we don’t have to restart the system after kernel upgrade.

If we talk about the terminal, they have changed the appearance a little bit. They have included adding new tab option with a search bar on top of the terminal.

Not only that, there are other improvements such as revamped audio settings, granular control on the night light which means we can change the intensity etc. If we talk about the download or upgrading, you can directly download it in their official site. But if you are currently using Ubuntu 18.04, you can’t directly upgrade to disco. First you should upgrade to 18.10. Then you can upgrade to 19.04.

Thank You!
