Entrepreneur to fund free pop-up cinema for kids

One Midlands entrepreneur is aiming to improve lives — by setting up a free monthly pop-up cinema event for inner-city children.

The marketing consultant is now looking to take the next step with his Pass the Popcorn business, having set up the venture in 2013.

Inspired to do cinema differently after paying for expensive tickets and even costlier snacks at a regular multiplex, Abdul went on to create the boutique company, which has screened costume dramas in lavish stately homes, and horror flicks in dark forests.

He says:

“When I realised the potential in the business I wanted to make sure we continue to create a social impact.”
“So we all decided that when the business is self-sufficient we will fund at least one movie night that is free for kids every month, in all the major cities in the UK.
“My parents didn’t have the money for my siblings and I to go to the cinema when we were young and I can only imagine it being more difficult for families today.”

The businessman is now in the running for the Virgin Media Business VOOM awards, an initiative where Richard Branson, Peter Kelly, and a distinguished team of judges pick winners in two categories -‘Start-Up’, which Abdul has entered, and ‘Grow’-at a live finale on June 28, 2016.

The winners will receive a cash prize of £50,000 to help grow their businesses, as well as mentoring from Virgin and VOOM Professionals, and a £250,000 marketing campaign.

Voting for VOOM 2016 is open now, and ends on 23 May.

Eighty entrants with the most votes between 5 April and 23 May go through to the next stage of the competition.
