Waiting for an apology
Do I decide who is worthy of forgiveness? Would I decide that I am worthy of forgiveness if I looked at my works from God’s perspective of absolute holiness?
Sometimes I find myself waiting for an apology. I ask forgiveness, which a person may give, but then that same person does not ask for my forgiveness, nor does he assume responsibility for any wrongdoing.
This way of thinking leads to bitterness. Jesus taught that we do not wait for one to apologize before we forgive him. Matt. 18:22 is clear: forgive, every time, no matter what. For me to wait for an apology is to weigh myself down with unnecessary burdens. Do I believe God forgave me without my asking? Yes, I do. Then if the holy God of the universe would forgive me without finding fault, even though I am the lowest, how could I withhold that free forgiveness from others? Am I a better judge than the Most High?
