This Week’s Word: GROUNDED

Are you able to maintain a sense of grounding in your daily life?
Do you have solid habits of self-care in place?

It’s critical to remain grounded in this world when surrounded by constant diversions, distractions, and multiple sources that drain our energy.

When we’re overwhelmed by mental and emotional pain, we need to find a way to separate ourselves from it so we can stay in control and remain safe.

Being ungrounded manifests in many shapes and forms.

For instance, it can lead to experiencing feelings of unhinged anxiety, hypervigilance, dizziness, and fatigue on all levels.

We may also find it challenging to stay in the present moment (mindfulness) or alternate between being engulfed by emotions and memories and not having enough feelings or repressing our memories. These occasions may be felt as numbness or dissociation (a feeling of disconnecting and drifting outside of our body).

A consistent and regular grounding practice helps with detachment from the behaviours associated with mental and emotional pain (e.g. drug cravings, impulsive behaviour, anger, mood swings).

Grounding’s purpose is to take you out of your inner self, keeping you in the present and refocusing you on your physical reality. So, this week, you’re being called to get grounded.

Ideas for Reflection:

• What does it mean for you to be firmly rooted in your place of life?
• What do you need to give up, say “no” to, or let go of to make yourself a priority?
• What do you need to change or refresh to have a more effective grounding practice?
• What boundaries do you need to set for your own mental and emotional wellbeing?

Pain and suffering are not who you are but a feeling you’re experiencing, and it obliterates any other emotions, so it feels like that’s all that exists.

Want to get grounded but not sure how to start? Here are some tips:

Ideas for Commitment

• Use grounding when faced with a trigger, enraged, having substance cravings, or when your emotional pain goes above a 6 (on a 0–10 scale).
• Practice for at least 10 minutes and rate your mood before and after grounding.
• Prepare in advance by locating places in your home, car, or workplace where you can place reminders for grounding.
• Start building a regular and consistent ground practice. You can begin by using my FREE WORKSHEET.
