An Thanksgiving Reflection

This Thanksgiving I am enjoying a little more solitude than most. While the tradition has a great marketing campaign of family gatherings, feasts, and shared moments of gratitude. However, not everyone experiences the holiday in the same way.

Several years ago, my family had to travel, leaving me alone at home to care for our animals. While I was blessed to have a family to miss and have worked a many holiday before being alone allowed me to appreciate the smaller things and reflect on the essence of gratitude.

Anew tradition arose where on Thanksgiving, I had a Swanson’s Turkey Dinner — a humble meal that symbolized more than just sustenance. It was a realization that not everyone has a family to miss or a home to call shelter. That many people would be grateful for the simple hot meal and warm place. It’s easy to forget their struggles when we’re caught up in our own lives.

En mass commercialization of the day whereas individuals continue working tirelessly to ensure our safety, health, and entertainment. From security guards and cashiers to nurses and firefighters, countless people sacrifice their holiday festivities to serve others. We forget about the street cleaners, the cashiers for that last can of cranberry sauce, or the technician that is taking the picture of your broken arm as you got too rough playing.

Yes, for the reality that I am going to spend Thanksgiving 2023 in solitude, I want to remind others there are those who work behind the scenes, ensuring that our communities function smoothly, even on holidays. This Thanksgiving, let’s reflect on the blessings we have and consider how we can contribute to making the world a better place for all.
