Why it’s Good to Have a Pet

There are some people that don’t like animals for any number of reasons. That’s ok and I understand that. A pet is probably not a good idea for you in that case. For anyone who likes animals however, a pet might be a great addition to your life.

There are a few obvious negative points people think about when considering getting a pet. There is going to be a sacrifice of time and money that is a part of being a pet owner. It is a commitment even to get something simple like a goldfish. You may feel tied down in a way because you have to think about who is going to look after your pet if you travel for any amount of time. It’s important to consider if you can make the commitment the pet needs before rushing out and getting one.

If you decide you want to bring a pet into your life, there are many positive things that can happen.

Pets, like cats and dogs, show unconditional love. We all need love in our lives right? Usually people love their pets and their pets love them. They become apart of the family. My cat lays on my lap and purrs to show me her love.

Pets can provide companionship. Everyone craves companionship in one way or another. Sometimes people go through lonely seasons. Pets are helpful during these times. Even when you have plenty of good relationships, the companionship of a pet can enhance your life.

Pets can take your attention off your problems and allow you to focus on something else. Like on petting or playing with your pet. This can have a positive impact on you emotional, mental and physical health. It can help reduce stress which has been shown to have a negative impact on health. I work at a hospital and there are special “Pet Therapy” days that patients can participate in. This is a wonderful form of recreation therapy for patients that can be beneficial for their health and well being. My cat is a great distraction when I’m in a bad mood or something is bothering me. She doesn’t judge me or argue with me. She just loves me.

Pets will teach you responsibility. You have to meet your pet’s needs. This is great for kids and adults to learn. It makes you think of another being other then yourself.

You can make a difference by adopting a pet that is in a shelter or a pound. There are many animals that need a home and family. It always feels good to help.

If you are thinking about getting a pet, think about the commitment but also realize all the benefits that a pet can bring. A pet can add many valuable lessons and love to your life.
