I think the key is to just do it for a certain period of time. For example, if you decide you’re going to devote yourself to doing something for an hour, then put your phone away for the hour. Then, you can check it afterwards.

I think the problem is that a lot of us check our phones and emails way more often than that, and then end up going back and forth between activities, with divided attention.
