Newton’s Third Law states: “To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction: or the mutual actions of two bodies upon each other are always equal, and directed to contrary parts.”

According to the Physics Classroom: “When you sit in your chair, your body exerts a downward force on the chair and the chair exerts an upward force on your body.

There are two forces resulting from this interaction — a force on the chair and a force on your body. These two forces are called action and reaction forces and are the subject of Newton’s third law of motion.”

The statement is more commonly stated this way: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I want you to do the following exercise with someone. Tell them to hold their hand up. Put your hand up and start pushing on their hand.

Do it more than once. See what happens. Did they push back? If so, that’s Newton’s Third Law in action.

Perhaps you will encounter some foolish person that will stand there and let you push their hand all over the place, but more often than not people will eventually start pushing back.
