Long Term Travel Tips: TL;DR

Being a Tortuganaut comes with great power. It also comes with great responsibility. We’re basically the Defenders.

I’m told that upon joining Tortuga I was blessed by Mercury, Meili, and all other gods, patrons, and protectors of travel. With their blessing, they bestowed upon me the universe’s collective knowledge of all things travel. What to pack? Where to go? How to get there? I know it all.

As the blessing was granted, a vast wealth of travel expertise entered my body through the soles of my feet, climbing through my veins and into my mind. Today, this information serves as a life force, flowing through me like the waters of the fountain of youth.

In all seriousness, deservedly or not, people ask me about travel often. I’m not sure that I have enough experience to justify this status, but I do think about travel virtually everyday. Not in the staring out the window lusting after a beautiful, remote desert island kind of way that you’re probably doing right now.

I spend my days thinking about travel in an analytical way. How does travel affect the behavior and psychology of our users? What roles does travel play in their lives? What experiences inhibit or empower travelers? You get the point.

In my conversations with travelers, we come back to the same themes over and over again. I figured I might as well share them here. These points are specifically intended for people embarking on life altering long-term journeys, but they would probably benefit anyone planning an adventure of any length.

In the coming installments, I’ll explore the most important travel tips I give when people ask for my advice.

For those of you who just want me to get to the point, I’ll leave you with this:

TL;DR

  1. Communicate More
  2. Pack Less
  3. Move Slowly, Plan Less

What key tips do you think I’m missing? I’ll add to this list as needed.
