While Call of Duty fans will see Call of Duty: Vanguard launch in early November, one leaker is already talking about a future game in the series. However, instead of talking about Call of Duty 2022, they focus on the franchise’s launch in 2023.

The whistleblower in question is Tom Henderson, a source who has been proven correct about franchises like Battlefield and Call of Duty on a number of different occasions. As such, Henderson has become a go-to source for FPS fans wanting early information. While it may be surprising to see the leaker focused on a Call of Duty game that won’t be released for a few years, it makes sense given that fans already know exactly what to expect from the 2022 release. With a sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 almost confirmed as the game of 2022, as it makes sense given the success of the reboot, many are wondering what exactly Treyarch will do in 2023. Now, it seems they have their answer, as Tom Henderson has clarified that the developer’s next game will be “semi-futuristic.” This should instantly get fans excited, especially with Henderson’s follow-up comment that the game is “boots on the ground.”

This description makes Call of Duty 2023 sound exactly like the fan-favorite Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Released in 2012, it was established in the near future to 2025 and featured an arsenal of unique weapons and gadgets. However, it didn’t take things too far in the eyes of fans, as a traditional movement system was kept for the game. While the exosuits from other futuristic Call of Duty games were seen as too much by a large section of the community, Black Ops 2 did not use them, making it a more enjoyable version of the future for many players. It will be interesting to see if the 2023 “semi-futuristic” Call of Duty game will take place in the Black Ops universe.

Treyarch has been making Black Ops games since 2010, however it’s a safe bet that the game will be part of the same subseries. It will be interesting to see if the campaign takes place after Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and follows David Mason, or if it takes place after Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and focuses on Alex Mason’s grandchildren. Likewise, fans are sure to expect to see iconic weapons like the AN-94, Skorpion EVO, and the KSG returning.

With so many Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 map remakes in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, it will be interesting to see if the 2023 game brings more BO2 locations. With the two games seemingly sharing a similar setup, this would make sense, although this leak should get Call of Duty fans excited either way.
