The regulatory barriers constructed by the EU impeded trade. What was originally seen as a huge advantage of the Union had worked against free trade. This was a vote against regulatory overhead and middlemen that slowed down distribution of goods a services. A solid argument can be made that the often maligned NAFTA arrangement is a much better model.
