Pardoning people around him would prevent them from invoking their 5th amendment right against self incrimination in further proceedings.

Pardoning himself (if even constitutional) could actually lead to obstruction of justice charges. Just because you have the authority to do something (like fire the FBI director) doesn’t mean you’re not on the hook if you exercise it with criminal intent. For example, presidential pardons aren’t exempt from the federal bribery statue.
