How I Made Lemonade and Thrived from Cancer!
My name is Patti Joyce and I’d like to share with you how my own experience with colon cancer brought about the most remarkable and exciting changes in my life and taught me how I could help many others with my wig business. My hope is that by sharing what inspired me, those of you are battling cancer, will be motivated to take life’s sour lemons that you’ve been given, turn them into sweet, rewarding lemonade and truly thrive from the experience just as I did.
Receiving a cancer diagnosis could certainly be enough to bring anyone’s positive attitude to a screeching halt, and when I received the news from my doctor, my spirits were certainly tested. My life as I had known it up until that point was turned upside down. The series of operations, chemotherapy, various treatments and tests, and the uphill battle to “Surviving and Thriving” that followed were a very difficult journey as well.
Thankfully, as a busy modern woman, wife, mother, and grandmother, I had long ago learned the importance of the old Southern adage, “Get up, suit up and show up.” Tremendous strength can be found in these seemingly simple words. Whatever challenges life brings you, and no matter how low you might feel when you wake up in the morning, you can turn your whole day and perspective around just by getting out of bed, dressing your best, and showing up for the day and your life.
Soon I discovered, through my own experience with hair loss as a result of my treatments, that there was a serious lack of high quality, comfortable, stylish, not to mention affordable wigs available to women like myself in a supportive, caring and loving environment. Suddenly, the significance of the “suit up” part of my motivating motto took on an entirely new meaning and I found my calling.
One of the most emotionally traumatic aspects of undergoing cancer treatment for a woman can be losing her hair. “Suiting up” with a beautiful, comfortable wig during this experience can offer a woman tremendous self-confidence and courage at a time when she needs it the most. There was no doubt in my mind: I wanted to help make a difference in the lives of women with cancer by offering them a collection of gorgeous, affordable and top quality wigs, as well as a full service online support network full of tips, guides and inspiration. And so, I founded Wigs by Patti’s Pearls to do just that.
With a degree in Theater Arts from Southern Illinois University and more than 20 years experience in training in the art of makeup, custom wig designing, cutting and styling, I can offer women the expertise and care to help them find the wigs that suit them perfectly. And as a cancer survivor myself, I created Patti’s Pearls as a place of compassion, support and love, where women can come to look and feel their best. Whether you’ve lost your hair as a result of medical treatments, age, alopecia or any other reason, think of Patti’s Pearls as your home where you can find comfort, confidence and courage.
In spite of all of the challenges that life throws your way, remember that you have the strength and resources to face them when you “Get up, suit up, and show up”. I feel truly blessed to help other women find that strength, and I encourage you to look for the blessings and opportunities in your life to turn those lemons into lemonade. Whether it’s through starting your own business, helping others in need, or inspiring others with your own story, together we can find so many ways to truly thrive from cancer.
