As someone who was raised by Greatest Generation parents, that’s exactly how I see it. America was great when it was fueled by grit and determination, and when you focused more on what you could earn than on what you believed someone owed you. When people were too busy focused on working as hard as it took to provide food for their family during the Great Depression or too busy storming the beaches of Normandy to be offended by something someone said.
No, it wasn’t perfect. But if something needed to be done, we did it. And we knew that our country would never be perfect, but that it was pretty damn good.
