Pat Toomey’s Efforts to Introduce Common Sense Gun Safety Laws
Pat has fought for commonsense gun safety laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, the mentally ill, and terrorists.
In an effort to reduce gun violence, Pat Toomey teamed up with his Democratic colleague Senator Joe Manchin to enhance background checks on firearm purchases in order to keep guns away from violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill. Pat’s work on this issue represents the closest Congress has come in years to enacting new gun safety laws.
As a result of his work on this issue, Pat was honored in the summer of 2015 by Sandy Hook Promise.
Even President Obama, Vice President Biden, and former Governor Rendell lauded Senator Toomey for this commonsense step to keep firearms away from violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill.
Following the heinous terrorist attack in Orlando, Pat re-upped his background check proposal with Joe Manchin. Additionally, Pat wrote legislation and supported another bipartisan proposal designed to keep firearms away from suspected terrorists.
Due to his commitment to keeping firearms away from violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill, Pat has been endorsed in his race for Senate by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Americans for Responsible Solutions, which is headed up by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.
