RIP Phife Dawg
For some reason, I didn’t check Reddit this morning. When I got to work, I opened Tidal (only streaming service not blocked) to slap some tunes and saw a featured playlist called ‘R.I.P. Phife Dawg’. Phife Dawg one half of the legendary hip hop duo A Tribe Called Quest.
What a sad day for hip hop. Only 45 years old. :(
Anyways, I just wanted to write a little bit about some key moments where Phife Dawg affected my life.
Rock The Bells
I was always a fan of the hits like Electric Relaxation, but when I saw their reunion performance at Rock The Bells 2010, all of that changed. They played Midnight Marauders front to back, their 1993 album, which is widely considered to be their best album, and is in many people’s Top 10 lists.
After enjoying their performance, I burned Midnight Marauders and put the CD in my car. I burned this to a CD because I wanted to enjoy the album front to back. It’s hard to do that with an iPhone... Also, if a CD makes it to my car, it is guaranteed to get far too much play time (mostly out of laziness).
The album is pretty much flawless. These lines have been stuck in my head many times since I first heard this album:
Back in ’89 I simply slid in the place
Buddy, buddy, buddy all up in your face
— Award Tour
Phife comes in hot with the 2nd verse on Award Tour. This is one of my all time favorite verses on a song. There’s just something about his flow on this song that gets me so pumped.
I like ’em brown, yellow, Puerto Rican or Haitian
Name is Phife Dawg from the Zulu Nation
— Electric Relaxation
Probably his most famous line of all time.
I like my beats hard like two day old shit
Steady eating booty MCs like cheese grits
— Oh My God
A true hip hop legend. A Tribe Called Quest is easily Top 3 in terms of hip hop groups next right next to Wu-Tang and OutKast. RIP Phife.
