Seven months after the release of 23c for DBaaS, Oracle has today (2 May 2024) announced the general release of 23ai — -that’s not a typo, Oracle has aligned towards the drive to AI and so 23c has been renamed. This is the latest Long Term Support release of Oracle Database.

My blog in September 2023 (here) has a lot more detail about the features, support timeline

They’ve separated the major new changes into the following areas:

· AI

· Development

· Mission Criticial

You can read more about these from Oracle here and here.

From a licensing perspective, what’s changed? Well, I blogged about most of 23c / 23ai’s capabilities in September 2023 here –which summarised no major changes.

In Oracle’s announcement today, it was made clear that they believe AI functionality should be included in the cost of the database — i.e. not an extra cost option.

The latest database licensing information document is here

Also a major feature but an omission from the previous manual was True Cache — it has been clarified in the licensing manual that all True Cache instances must match the edition of the primary database which makes sense.

Additionally, it has been clarified that SQL Firewall is part of Database Vault or Audit Vault + Database Firewall.

It will be interesting to see at what speed customers adopt 23ai given most have only just moved over to 19c.
