Why Your Genetics Didn’t Make You Fat
There is plenty of media out there about how your genetics play a role into how you look. Much of the supporting evidence for this is just that people who grow up in homes with fit parents tend to be fit also and the opposite is true too. Many of us buy into this and give ourselves a way out that doesn’t blame yourself for being in the shape you are in.
The real issue is that we learn our behaviors primarily from our family. We live life learning how to eat and play like the rest of our family does. If that is unhealthy eating then we will most likely begin to eat in an unhealthy manner. If it is going outside to play instead of watching television, that’s probably what we will do. Understanding that you are just opperating on learned behavior is the first step to realizing how much control you have over your own health.
This go’s way beyond gaining and losing weight. This plays into things like heart health, diabetes, and a bunch of other chronic illnesses that we are taught are just a part of who we are because it’s in our blood. When you start to realize that we are all born with the same human body and the way that you treat it results in how it grows and operates you start to see just how much you can change it.
More than likely, whatever you are trying to change about yourself has been a part of you for many years. In saying that, you have to also realize that it doesn’t go away over night. You have to put in the constant and consistent effort each day in order to right the wrongs of many many years. Fighting what you thought were genetics is a hard road but it can definitely be a battle that you win as long as you stick with it.
Never give up. When you feel like making excuses for why you can’t lose weight ask yourself if you have really been consistent with your diet and training and you just might find what’s wrong if you are truly honest with yourself. Self-awareness is difficult at best but it is extremely important. But that is a different topic for a different blog.
