Does anyone *really* believe AI’s will experience consciousness?

Consciousness is underrated as a phenomenon. Will AI’s ever experience vivid perception of self like humans do? Never say never of course. And I actually do appreciate that many AI researchers do *say* that AI’s will one day become conscious. But I sometimes wonder if we are all talking about the same thing.

Most of us everyday folks — including PhD researchers and AI developers like myself — ‘know’ that we ourselves are conscious.

We just can’t prove it to anyone else though.

Many AI researchers do claim that AI’s could become conscious in the future.

But I’m skeptical of all three of:

  1. The claims themselves
  2. The veracity of belief in stating them
  3. Whether they mean what I mean by consciousness

Consciousness

So, what, to the best of our knowledge, is consciousness?

It’s not just ‘being awake’.

Consciousness is that self-aware feeling that we are actually experiencing the life of the body we inhabit. Consciousness is even more than being ‘able to process and direct our own thoughts’.
