I’m normally a calm, congenial and open-minded AI engineer, startup guy & PhD researcher.

I even share much in common with the interests of NYU’s Gary Marcus and the celebrated US academic linguist Noam Chomsky, my being a PhD physicist / mathematical biologist with a love of symbolic AI, linguistics, startups and philosophy and history of science.

But what these two anti-neural network campaigners (for want of a better characterization) — along with others like AI researcher Dagmar Monett of the Berlin School of Economics and Law — are doing is preposterous and demonstrably 100% false.

They are claiming to innocent, unsuspecting devotees and new comers to AI and computational linguistics alike that

There is a ‘great AI lie’ that needs debunking

AI is a fantasy

AI has deviated away from goals of insight into human language to instead attempting to engineer computational intelligence

Neural networks like GPT-3 are of no interest to linguistic science
