What does a successful team look like?

During my career I have worked on a lot teams. One question that I have tried to answer is “what makes a successful team?” I still don’t have a complete answer to this question, but in my experience there appear to be three characteristics which are fundamental in determining team success.
- A strong leader. This is a leader who sets a clear vision for the team. Team members are clear on their role in executing on the team’s vision. A leader is responsible for crafting the culture of the team, which is linked to the second characteristic of successful teams.
- Team members who *genuinely* want (and help) others to succeed in their work. This means an absence of territory, egos, and other unhealthy behaviors. A strong leader will be quick to pick up on a lack of collaborative spirit within the team and will course correct accordingly.
- Team members who can adapt quickly to the needs of the business. Highly successful teams are able to flex with changes in priorities and are able to execute on their work in unison despite change.
There are undoubtedly far more characteristics that set up teams for success. I would love to hear your thoughts on what makes a successful team.
