Reflecting on Susan Fowler’s Reflections

All fascinating, nothing surprising. I don’t have facts on the tech employee age breakdown at Uber, but it also wouldn’t surprise me if most are under 40. For women who manage to stay in technology into their 40’s and 50's, the trajectory can go from sexual harassment (being seen as a young lady), to being pushed into caregiver roles (being seen as the ‘mom’ or the ‘wife’). It’s not just about sexism; toxic cultures also enable racism, ageism, anything-but-privilege-ism. It’s admirable to devote yourself to trying to change the culture at a toxic company, but that’s a very long and complex game. And, at the end of the day, do you really believe that Uber will thank you for your self sacrifice? What would happen if you let go and looked for a culture where you could create something meaningful to you, and not waste your time trying to fix a broken company culture? When I think of all the women out there trying to fix broken company culture, I think about talent that could be somewhere else creating amazing teams and amazing products.
