For something that is such a despicable, heinous crime not just within the criminal justice system, but against humanity itself there really isn’t enough weight paid to the circumstances of the act itself. In most cases the punishment certainly doesn’t fit the crime and many offenders go unpunished whether it be for fear of the consequences on the victims behalf or a lack of evidence. Rape angers me with a raging passion. The emotional and potentially physical impact it can have on the victim grossly outweighs the potential punishments handed out to the offender. There simply isn’t enough protection and post traumatic support in society (it’s a lot worse outside developed western societies). Look at the problems India has, where a woman was gang raped on a bus and her newborn son killed while she was forced to look on, this was reported last month. Although at the extreme end of the spectrum, seven men were sentenced to death in India after a brutal rape killing of a Nepalese woman being treated for depression. The judge said she wanted to send out a message and rightly so. Much tougher sentences are needed in all societies.
