Happy Australia Day… for some
I’ve always thought that the day of Australia’s Federation, January 1, when our colonies finally became united under our own national flag is a much better day to celebrate being Australian than January 26 which celebrates the arrival of the first fleet in 1788.
We cannot continue to ignore the pain and disrespect we show the first people of our nation by celebrating the day that foreigners came to our shores and slaughtered them, dispossessing them of their land, culture and customs and enslaving many of the survivors.
We all have a lot to celebrate and be grateful for as Australians. We just need to celebrate our national day within the context of a shared identity – not a conveniently forgotten history stained with blood.
Australians are better than that. And there’s no reason we can’t change our national day to prove it.
