I was subjected to this gem of the ‘Invective as Virtue-Signalling’ genre over a Confederate monument post recently:
Do you want to be responsible for future crimes against humanity, such as slavery or genocide?
If the answer is yes, then hold up as Heroes those who have gotten us where we are today and ignore any and all attrocities they committed to achieve their goals.
If the answer is no, then we must expose and condemn those evils and endeavor to achieve societal, industrial and economic progress without repeating said catastrophic actions.
The history of almost every nation in the world is filled with genocide, slavery and conquest. Because those are the easiest ways to achieve wealth and power for a small majority.
We can and must do better than that.
It’s difficult to reply to someone who gets so histrionic over such a relatively inconsequential issue. Medication is probably the best answer, but I chose the only avenue available to me — the harsh tonic of mockery.
