Slim also holds the notes on much of NYT’s outstanding debt (NYT was desperate for financing a few years ago and, given all the $$$ they wasted on things like the Boston Globe purchase, Slim was one of the only parties willing to lend to them).

So the finger-wagging over what technically constitutes ‘ownership’ kind of misses the point (and is most likely being used to distract) — through both the shares he directly owns and the debt he holds, Carlos Slim exercises what amounts to control over the NYT.
