Interesting take, Carl. I side more so with Dave politically but I respect your input.

I would disagree with the notion that people voted for Trump because of the “smugness and condescension” of the Left. They hate the Left and they’ll find anything to justify it. Kerry’s windsurfing, for example. Hillary’s comment about the “deplorables” is often brought up in the 2016 election but let’s face it, they’ve hated her for years and would never have voted for her. That comment was a easy out for them to dismiss her.

I would also ask, how is one not to be condescending when the GOP is the party that rejects science again and again? As an example, a GOP state representative in my state (WI) recently declared that the earth is 6,000 years old. AND said it was fact! Later he slightly amended that to say many people believe it to be true (but didn’t back off the basic point he was making). How can one not be smug and condescending (and angry and exasperated) at people such as this (and who wield power!)?
