My career path has never been straight forward. Tech has always been an area of interest and given my statistical background, I opted for data science as a logical path. Regardless of how many opinions I received along the way, I held on for as long as I could just because it is not in my nature to give up. Let me just add that I am still holding on.

Recently, a lot of companies in Nairobi have had data scientist vacancies implying that there is a need in the market for data scientists. This is good news for us. However, this post is not about the opportunities that exist. This one is about one particular challenge.

It has been a very interesting journey. I can sincerely say that the hardest part of being a data analyst has been not getting paid for work. Sometimes, you have to pick which projects to get involved in or who to work for because of opportunity cost. When working with data, exposure to different scenarios is paramount but sometimes you just have to walk away.

I hope that one day this will end. Until then, I will have to learn to say no.
