Sound/Ambience
This piece is a recording of the sounds that would be heard in the atmosphere of a large space which in this case is, the library. My sound piece is inspired by John Cage’s composition 4’33” which is commonly known as John Cage’s “silent” piece, 4’33” compromises three movements which the performer or performers are instructed the make no intentional sounds for four minutes and thirty-three seconds. When discussing the work over his lifetime. He emphasized that rather than intending to shock the audience, he hoped to adjust listeners to silence as a structure within musical notation. While watching the performance, although there is silence in the atmosphere, other than the few times in which the orchestra make a move when instructed, during those moments of silence within the space you begin to hear sounds within the atmosphere for example the sounds coming from the air vents. In my sound piece I decided to go to the UTS library and just record the sounds from the atmosphere around me, in the recording you can hear the sounds of people talking with one another, people working on their computers and of course there’s the sound of the air-conditioning. In my drawing I used a series of crosses along the vertical lines to show the different volumes of the sound within the recording after that I used a continuous line to make a rough but not exact shape of the sound throughout the recording.
