Dead of Winter #1 (Oni Press)

A comic where dogs are winners and zombies are dinner.

If it’s cliche to run with yet another zombie trope, it’s now more than ever that much more cliche to complain about it. I mean zombies are here to stay. They’re not going anywhere.

Being unfamiliar with the board game origins of Dead of Winter, I took a chance on this comic by the lull of Sparky the zombie-killing wonder dog on the cover. We know what humans are capable of in a post-apocalyptic zombie world — but what about dogs?

Hi I’m Sparky I’m Here To Rescue You

The survivors have entrenched themselves in an old government building but need supplies and need them fast.

Some are eager, some are reluctant. One thing is for sure — Sparky waits for no one!

Don’t Tell Sparky What To Do

What I like about Dead of Winter (and with any zombie tale at this point) is that it gets straight to the matter. No why are there zombies or this world is like this because...We know there are survivors. We know they need supplies. And we know that shit needs to happen in order for them to survive. That’s all we need.

By jumping on board in the middle of their survival and tagging along Sparky as the protagonist, we get everything we need out of this tightly paced and action-packed zombie tale: a diverse well rounded cast, sharp quips, zombie violence, and heroic dogs.

Oh and a possibly-cannibalistic drunk Santa Claus that you kinda wanna root for.

Pick this comic up!!
