The BBC Radio 4 morning book of the week: The Other Paris by Luc Sante where barricading the streets was allegedly invented in the 15th and perfected during the 19th century in Episode 1:

The 2nd episode covers the peripheral (now La Peripherique) barrier which supported Hadrians’ Wall type toll gates. This construction was demolished in the 1920's.
