Nicely written article. :) As a manager myself I can related with many of the ideias you pass in the article: people over projects, trust over control and communcation/empathy above everything else.
But on this specific question, while not being there and not having all the context, the question isn’t that wierd for me. When someone tells you the path they would like to follow it’s important to understand what drives them to get there. In some situations I do regret not doing the same question and trying to help someone achieving their goals when their motives weren’t as solid as my effort to help them, we ended up failing achieving the goals but we learned a valuable lesson anyway ^^.
