5. TO BE SERVED OR TO SERVE?

Growing up, I used to think that rich people are the ones who get served and it’s the work of the poor to give service.

This led to another train of thought; wealth aside..If I don’t perform well in school and get A’s, a standard that has been set to measure ones success in future, go to the national schools, land a good job, sit in that huge office on 10th floor, then I’d be doomed for life, unhappy and serve rich people until old age;

Quite an imagination I had there sigh..

I held on to this belief until a few years back when I was trying to find meaning in life, my life, and really, we all live to serve.

Most of us when young at some point wanted to be president and live in the White House..swim in wealth and eat with a silver spoon…If you ask me, the president has an island of responsibilities and an ocean of citizens who look up to this figure for one thing or another.

My point, “To whom much is given, much is expected”. If you really think about it, wealth is not only monetary, but also it’s more mental, spiritual, moral etc.

This morning, I woke up to Tom Kuegler’s article about ‘The worst mistakes people make in job interviews’ ,and this caught my attention;

“ Candidates especially from good schools and pedigrees have this problem of arrogance, self-absorption and think everything that comes out of their mouth is worth their weight in gold” .

I must confess, it took me by surprise to learn that interviewers mostly go with the gut feeling because you applying for a particular post means you are well versed with what is expected. So they inquire more into who you are as a person.

Don’t get me wrong. I never said it is wrong to be ambitious. As a matter of fact, it is our responsibility to perform well in school because I believe we all are capable.

I emphasize more on humility and being self-conscious because we all are accountable for something or someone.

There is so much joy and peace in service.
