How to do a satire
All you need is Chrome Dev Tools and a screenshot.

Everyone is tweeting their takes on a trending story, and you want to get some of that sweet, sweet retweet action! You have the perfect smart-alecky satirical twist, but the thought of Photoshopping the original is intimidating, nigh impossible. Plus, even if you had an image editor and knew how to get started, getting all the fonts and layouts right seems fiddly and error-prone: a sloppy ‘shop is worse than none!
Fortunately, there’s a much easier way to doctor the source, no Photoshop required. Let the browser do the work.
The trick is to use “developer tools” that are now built-in to any major popular web browser, like Chrome or Firefox. Dev tools give, surprise, developers a way to interactively change a web page while they are designing them. You can edit the source of the page directly in the dev tools, and see the change immediately on the page, without reloading or saving.
The way to bring up dev tools is to right-click on the words that you want to change on the web page in question, and then click on “Inspect” from the pop-up menu. (I’m using Chrome at the moment, exact wording for other browsers may vary slightly.)

This will bring up a little window-within-the-window of your browser, which is the dev tools area:

There is a lot going on here, but don’t panic, we’re only interested in the portion highlighted:

As you can see, we’re looking at the source HTML of the page, as it is currently rendered by your browser.
Note that by doing “Inspect” on the text we want to change, that HTML element is selected (in grey) in the source window:

Now, just double-click directly on the text you want to change, and it will become editable:

Just overwrite whatever was there with the text you want, then hit “enter”, and watch as the web page is updated with your change:

What’s great about using dev tools to do your satire is the browser handles all the heavy-lifting of layouts, the fonts are already loaded, CSS is set up for each element, etc. You’re really just text-editing. Easy.
Once you’ve defaced the web page to your satisfaction, take a screenshot of your work. Remember, dev tools works on the live page, so if you close the page or reload it, you’ll lose the changes and have to start over. On a Mac, press Shift-Control-Command-4, drag and select the area over your changes, and the screenshot will be copied to your clipboard. Then you can paste it directly into Twitter or whatever.
This method is very flexible. You can even replace images, for example, by replacing the src attribute on an <img> tag. Have fun!
