Whose Life Are You Living?

Anyone who is under the illusion that being self employed will make them happy is in for a shock. Of course you are in control of your time and you do have the chance to increase your income way above what you receive as an employee. But on the flip side you don’t get paid for holidays or for time off sick. You never know how much you will be paid in any given month if at all – some invoices don’t get paid for months. You probably only earn for about 10 months of the year – there are times when there’s no work and no income which is very stressful especially if you have employees.

Your business is a living, breathing entity that needs nourishing with lots of time and money – you can forget about the nine to five. Being self employed is a twenty four hour job.

I think that for most people finding a job that they enjoy, that pays well enough is a better path to career happiness. The trouble is that all these articles about finding your passion, about changing the world etc etc make people unhappy with their life when actually they’ve already got it good. People don’t need to find their passion, they need to find the right attitude then everything else will follow.
