US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg is a Fellow Introvert Just Like Me (A Random Excerpt from Volume 2 of my Autobiography)
Many times, especially in meetings, Introverts will spend most of their time listening to and thinking about the points, suggestions, recommendations, and “pearls of wisdom” from their colleagues. And then, having spent the time processing, analyzing what they have heard, and synthesizing it all, will weigh in with a “hey, wait-a-minute” intervention that often upends or precipitate action from all that had gone on before.
The above-mentioned scenario squares with my own experience. A good example of this is seen in the modus operandus of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
Slate Magazine’s Dahlia Lithwick, who writes on the US Supreme Court and law, in a piece on March 16, 2015, on the occasion of Justice Ginsberg’s 82nd birthday, noted that the “itty-bitty, soft-spoken, reserved, and painfully shy” octogenarian, “fired-up and furious,” broke with her “ameliorative, gentle, collegial style, and tradition, and read aloud from the bench dissenting opinions from her all-male colleagues on the US Supreme Court.”
Justice Ginsberg is now being described as “badass, rock star Jurist” complete with tee shirts and bumper stickers extolling her “badness” as the Notorious R.B.G (a play on the moniker of late US rapper the Notorious B.I.G).
One commentator observes that all the tough imagery about Justice Ginsberg, which has gone viral, is compelling because “it is so discordant with who she is, which is unfailingly professional, polite, calm, and not at all physically imposing.” Clearly, Introverts will kick ass when convinced it’s the right thing to do.
Ginsberg, like many Introverts, is also wickedly funny. In a recent interview she admitted to falling asleep during the 2015 State of the Union address by President Obama because, before the speech, she had “a bit too much wine.”
