The all-time famous Graphic Designers!
Introduction
While the graphic design may appear to be a relatively modern field, it is actually fairly old.
Graphic design has been evolving and growing for decades, thanks to the efforts of innumerable designers.
To honor this rich and vibrant history, we’ve produced a list of 5 well-known designers who have influenced graphic design in some way.
Through typography and magazine design to album covers and political posters, each of these individuals has left their stamp on the industry and molded it in some way via their hard work and brilliant designs.
01. SAUL BASS
Saul Bass is a design legend whose work you’ve almost certainly seen before. In the 1950s, Bass made his mark on the design world by creating iconic movie posters and motion picture title sequences for films such as Psycho, The Man with the Golden Arm, and North by Northwest.
Bass was also an accomplished logo designer, has created a plethora of timeless brand marks with an average lifespan of about 35 years. Much of his work is still in use today — just look at the Kleenex, Girl Scout, or AT&T logos.
02. Paula Scher
Paula Scher was the first woman to be labeled a principal at the prestigious graphic design firm Pentagram, and for good reason. Her impressive body of work influenced the perception and application of graphic design in many ways, particularly her technique of treating type as a visual image in her work for New York City’s Public Theater (pictured above), which has left an indelible mark on modern design.
03. Stefan Sagmeister
Stefan Sagmeister is an accomplished contemporary designer with a client list that includes The Rolling Stones, HBO, and the Guggenheim. Sagmeister’s work frequently combines humor, sexuality, the unconventional, and painstaking detail to create startlingly modern designs that continue to inspire and shake the design community.
04. David Carson
David Carson, dubbed “the Godfather of Grunge,” revolutionized the design industry by taking a unique, rule-breaking approach to design. His strikingly shredded, warped, and sometimes illegible layout designs continue to be a source of radical inspiration for designers all over the world.
05. Michael Bierut
Michael Bierut is frequently credited with “democratizing design” as a result of his distinct and ubiquitous approach to graphic design. Bierut paved the way for ‘accessible’ design, in which complex content was made easier and more appealing to read and consume by using a sharp, direct design.
