What is RTS game?
- Real-time strategy (RTS) is a subgenre of strategy video games that do not progress incrementally in turns, but allow all players to play simultaneously, in “real time”. By contrast, in turn-based strategy (TBS) games, players take turns to play. The term “real-time strategy” was coined by Brett Sperry to market Dune II in the early 1990s.
21 years of flourishing RTS game series:
- Real-time strategy games are not among the first game genres to emerge, but in the history of the gaming industry, they are renowned as one of the most outstanding and dedicated game genres.
- During its early days, real-time strategy games were heavily based on tabletop games, where players took turns and had time to calculate their moves before their opponents had a chance. RTS changed this mindset and made the gameplay much closer to reality: every decision is made swiftly, and if you fail to exploit your resources, your opponent will use them against you.
The end of the RTS game series
- In recent years, the concept of pure real-time strategy (RTS) games has gradually faded, and it might be challenging to list more than five prominent titles that have appeared within the last four years. It’s essential to remember that real-time strategy games should adhere to the principles of developing the economy and building armies on the same map, without dividing the gameplay into separate parts or multiple sections like in Total War games.
- Even in events like The Game Awards, there has been a noticeable absence of the RTS genre. The Strategy category wasn’t even included in the official nomination list before 2016. Even when examining the winners strictly, most of the awarded games may not be pure RTS titles. Rare examples might include games like “Tooth and Tail” or “Halo Wars 2,” but they face stiff competition from other strategy games like “Total War” or “Fire Emblem,” which dominate the genre extensively.
What makes RTS games interesting?
- RTS games feature fast-paced gameplay, demanding players to have quick reflexes and sharp minds. Players must also be proficient in using a mouse and keyboard for effective control. In a typical RTS game, players will see a large world map on their screens, displaying various structures, buildings, obstacles, and accompanied by a control panel, radar, or a mini-map for comprehensive observation of the battlefield.
- Upon entering the game, players are placed in a specific playing area with some initial structures and buildings. They are usually required to construct additional special buildings to unlock certain features. Most RTS games necessitate players to build an army to defend their base or engage in combat against invading enemies. Gathering weapons and resources is often central to the gameplay.
- There are two common gameplay trends in RTS games: Micromanagement and Macromanagement. Micromanagement requires the ability to control individual weapons, units, and deploy specific tactics for continuous small-scale battles. On the other hand, Macromanagement emphasizes long-term strategic planning, focusing on large-scale aspects such as economic development and base expansion over an extended period.
