Putting this here since I couldn’t find much information about it on the Internet.

Grub 2 has a bug where it will fail to boot on Apollo Lake CPUs such as the Intel N4200 on the Acer Spin 1. The symptom is that Grub will show a single underscore on the top left of the screen and freeze.

The patch which fixes this issue is already in grub’s git tree (https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/grub.git/commit/?id=446794de8da4329ea532cbee4ca877bcafd0e534) but has not been released in a stable version yet as of Grub 2.02.

  • Grub included in Chromium OS builds, both CloudReady and Arnoldthebat builds (as of v66) are affected and will not boot.
  • Ubuntu Grub is not affected because they have backported the fix.

If you want to run Chromium OS on an Intel N4200 CPU, you may download my build from Grub with the fix included at https://github.com/pawitp/grub2-chromiumos-n4200/ and replace either grubx64.efi or bootx64.efi in your EFI partition.
