First of all, it’s called Interactive Fiction, the modern successor to “Choose Your Own Adventure paperbacks of yore”. Second, you clearly have never tried one or you’d know there are some amazing stories out there. I wrote one for FB Messenger and it’s a HELL of a lot of fun. And no, it sure as hell did not require an “exponential” number of alternatives any more than navigating your own home does not present an exponential number of options.
