Disclaimer: I do not have all of the key details of Instacart’s user base, and I am making assumptions, based on limited information. This article is simply me diving into one of my favorite companies and exploring a feature that seems intriguing, although it may not be possible due to limitations.

What is Instacart?

Instacart is a service specializing in grocery delivery and pickup. Through its website or mobile app, customers can shop for groceries, household items, and alcohol from a variety of local stores. After checkout, an Instacart shopper visits the store, purchases the items, and delivers them to the customer’s location within a specified time frame!

Who Uses Instacart?

What is CartGuard?

CartGuard is a feature I have created to help the shopper who has any type of dietary restrictions. Many people struggle to find the time to grocery shop, let alone comb through every product’s ingredients to ensure it is safe and meets their dietary needs.

How Does CartGuard Work?

Considerations

  1. Allergies: The severity of allergies can range greatly based on the individual. Something I want to be cognizant of is the fact that some people may not be able to consume foods that aren’t 100% allergy safe, even if the label doesn’t have the allergen listed.
  2. Differentiation: Another big aspect to CartGuard is ensuring it does right by those who have allergies and those who just have dietary preferences. These two users will have different priorities and different levels of strictness, I want to be sure this feature assists both users equally.

Future of CartGuard

  1. Personalized Alerts: In the future another cool element to incorporate would be personalized alerts. Maybe a user doesn’t want to be notified for certain items or maybe they only want to see alerts if the ingredient is in the top five of the ingredient list.
  2. Integrating with Other Companies: A unique feature we could add in would be integrating with other companies (like Yuka or Fig) who are more health focused. These could be used to show users how their foods are rated as well! Granted this option needs to be considered very carefully as working with other companies can bring both pros and cons to the business!
