What’s the difference between user experience design and app development?

User experience design focuses on understanding what problem to solve, exploring ideas to generate solutions, designing the details, and optimizing the usability of systems and applications. In short, UX design determines the why and defines the what, whereas app development or programming enables the how.

User experience is the perception that users or customers have about their interactions with a product or a service. A good user experience, for example, is when an app has the features or functionality that you need, is very easy to use, and responds and loads quickly. User experience is comprised of various disciplines, including user research, interaction design, information architecture, and visual design. This YoUthXDesign module on Designing Mobile Apps introduces high school students to these disciplines and fundamental design concepts.

Why is user experience important?

When you’re creating an app, it’s very likely that you’re making it for others to use and enjoy. What they think about your product matters because they make the decision to download it, use it, and even pay for it. So having a good user experience is paramount. This activity teaches kids about the different disciplines of user experience design and takes them through the design process to build a product that people will love.
