Judging by the fundraising in the upcoming election cycle — wherein Democrats (the DNC) are raising far less than usual and the Republicans (the RNC) are raising far more than usual — it appears at the moment as if the Republicans will maintain and possibly gain seats in the 2018 midterms. Of course, a LOT can change between now and then. Either way, it’s astonishing to think that the Democrats aren’t performing better as it relates to fundraising, especially given the apparent widespread animus for Trump.

Or so we’ve been led to believe?

Perhaps the MSM’s portrayal of the seething anger — more like hysteria — for and around Trump and his administration is not reflective of the country as a whole. It wouldn’t be the first time they got it terribly, desperately wrong (see: Election 2016). Is it possible that just as Obama was maybe not as respected and admired as the MSM made him out to be, the same can be said about Trump but in reverse? Is he as universally despised as the MSM makes him out to be? I’m not so sure.

What also gives me pause is the fact that the Republicans are now raising far more than the Democrats from small-donation donors (see link above). Ostensibly, this means that more middle- and lower-income, working class voters are donating to Republicans than Democrats. If that is indeed the case, it represents a near-total inversion in the base of the political parties over the last 8+ years. That may be the most interesting, and telling, phenomenon of all.
