It looks like OLED gaming displays will step into a new phase, as Dough announces its upcoming “Spectrum Black” 31.5″ OLED monitor featuring 4K resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate.

Dough Spectrum Black Gaming Display Comes With a 4K OLED Panel & 240Hz Refresh Rate In Both Gloss and Matte Flavors

If you haven’t heard about Dough before, you shouldn’t be surprised, as the company has a limited portfolio of displays. Dough was formally known as Eve, and the company has released somewhat surprising products in the past, starting with its Spectrum monitor lineup. Moreover, the company’s initiation has also been through crowdfunding platforms; hence, it raises some concerns about its credibility. We won’t go into the depths of the company’s past since this article aims to unveil the benchmark-setting OLED display.

Dough has released two different variants of the Spectrum Black, a model with “glass coating” called the ES07E3D and the traditional one called ES07E3F. The company’s branding choice is tricky, but we will leave that for now.

Diving into the “Spectrum Black” specifications, the display features a 16:9 ratio flat 31.5-inch panel with a maximum resolution rated at 3840 x 2160. This display is exciting because the high resolution coupled with the large screen size will definitely enhance the quality output due to improved pixel distribution. The display supports a 240Hz refresh rate with a G2G (Gray-to-Gray) response time of 0.03ms.

For gaming users, the display is compatible with NVIDIA’s G-Sync and AMD’s Freesync Premium Pro and VRR capabilities. The gaming display has a 10-bit color depth and a color gamut rated 98.5% DCI-P3. On paper, the Spectrum Black looks great, offering adequate specs for both gamers and professionals.

We mentioned earlier about a “glass-coated” variant in the lineup. Detailing that, Dough has partnered up with the famous company Corning to develop a unique glass DXR AC coating on the screen. The company reveals that through this, the contrast ratio witnesses a 40% increase and a reduction in reflections by 70%. Going into the argument of “glass vs matte” coating will make things a whole lot more complicated, but it mostly depends on user preference, which is why Dough has also released a traditional matte variant.

A distinctive feature from previous models is the inclusion of BFI (Black Frame Insertion). This enables enhanced clarity in high-motion situations, and many current OLED options lack this feature. However, the effectiveness of BFI in Dough panels is a question yet to be answered.

Coming to onboard ports, the Black Spectrum features two HDMI 2.1 ports along with 1 DisplayPort 1.4 port. USB options include 1x USB type-C, which can cope with 100W power delivery. In addition, there are two USB type-C and two USB type-A ports. There are adequate port options onboard, catering to every consumer type.

Before moving to the pivotal factor, such as pricing, there is a fact to highlight. While we won’t judge Dough based on previous experiences, having a Trustpilot rating of 1.4 will raise a feeling of caution amongst consumers. We won’t recommend users buy the gaming display right away, and they should wait for credible reviews to drop by. Moreover, a valid point to raise here is that renowned companies, such as LG and Samsung, haven’t released a 32-inch OLED monitor, which reveals that the technology is in its initial stages.

The “Black Spectrum” matte model starts at $699, while the “glass coating” one is expected to drop to $799. Dough has revealed that the pricing for the gaming display could exceed the $1000 mark once it hits retail markets; hence the company has opened “invitational” orders for consumers interested.

Regarding when the monitor releases also comes with a controversy. While Dough has disclosed that the monitor could be available for purchase by Q2-Q3 2024, a Dough employee has informed (via Reddit) that it will be available by late 2024; hence, the date is still being determined, and one should expect delays.
