How Twitter’s New Layout Can Affect Business

Twitter is currently in the process of trialing new variations of tweet replies with an emphasis on improving public engagement. Such changes includes threaded individual tweet responses to better see responses in a tweet chain, color coding responses to highlight key replies and green dots next to profiles specifying an active user with the incentive to encourage real-time engagement. Twitter product manager Sara Haider posted the potential templates to different users and asked for feedback as an experiment to see how Twitter can evolve.

How will this affect businesses who use Twitter as a social media platform? Businesses looking to sell products, bring awareness to a cause or whatever the intention may be, can certainly take advantage of Twitter’s modifications. Businesses can network more with their followers in real time and interact on a more personal level. It will also be more advantageous for a business to see and engage with their followers on a tweet’s response chain. The threaded responses can be an efficient way for a business to see what the public wants or how they can better themselves. While a lot of useful resources can be brought to the table with Twitter’s new layout, business must also take caution. Depending on the number of followers a business cannot engage in real-time with their audience all the time. When one’s availability is public online, there seems to be an innate “obligation” to respond all interactions. Another prospective problem is, as seen on Facebook, how most people tend to engage “just for the comments” or enjoy trolling. With new technology (or layouts) businesses will have to evolve their social media strategies to stay on top!
