Math Camp is joining Pinterest!

It’s been 5 years since we began working on Math Camp. I met Ben in 2011 through some mutual friends and we decided to meet up one day at The Creamery — a small coffee shop in San Francisco’s SOMA district. We talked at length about technology, exploration, and the future, and it was clear we had been thinking about a lot of similar things.

After a few more fun discussions we decided we’d like to work together, and we began development on Nametag — an early prototype of the app that was to become Highlight. Our goal was to use new location technology to change how discovery worked in the real world.

We tested the app in a small private beta that November. There were only two of us at the time and the prototype we built had all sorts of issues, but to us, it felt magical. When you met someone, it helped you discover what you had in common. As you walked around town, it showed you interesting people nearby. It introduced you to things you had never seen before and made each day more fun.

We released Highlight officially in January 2012 and launched at SXSW, which was the start of an amazing new chapter for the company. When we came back we began to invest deeply in the technology, grew as a team, and learned a lot about the space. Eventually we expanded our product suite, launching two new apps — Roll and Shorts — alongside Highlight.

4 years later, we’re delighted to announce that we are being acquired by Pinterest — to continue the work we’ve been doing around recommendations, photo/video sharing, and real-world discovery, but at a much larger scale.

Though the team will live on, we’ll be focused on building within the core Pinterest product. Sadly, this means we’ll be shutting down the Highlight, Roll and Shorts apps over the coming weeks. In the meantime, we are going to be working hard to make sure it’s a smooth transition for you. We will also be open sourcing a lot of our work so that the developer community can benefit from it.

We can’t tell you how much we appreciate the support you’ve given us these past 5 years. Creating these products for you has been one of the best experiences of our lives. We feel so grateful for every moment of it, and hope to build many amazing things for you down the road.
