The stackoverflow survey refers to this as “most commonly used programming language” and it’s under the heading of “popular technology”. So are they measuring popularity or common usage? Common usage is independent of popularity. Popularity has a very specific definition, i.e., it’s something people enjoy. For example, public restroom usage is common but not popular. This statistic about JavaScript needs clarification in order to be useful.
