Ambitious Drupal Starshot Initiative announced
On Monday founder and project lead of Drupal Dries Buytaert took to the stage of DrupalCon Portland and announced the Drupal Starshot Initiative.
Central to Starshot will be the introduction of a new Drupal CMS. This will see a quantum shift in Drupal out-of-box user experience, a radical change that will be achieved with high momentum so the benefits are realised in months not years.
Why Starshot?
Drupal is behind 1 in 8 enterprise websites. It is market leader across many disciplines, including accessibility, multilingual; yet there remains a high technical barrier in the implementation of these super powers which restricts use by vast numbers of potential end users.
The intention of Starshot initiative is to dramatically lower the technical skills required to harness the full range of capabilities to bring them within reach of the ambitious site builder.
Drupal has always been about democratisation of technology. Being free and available to all. Starshot is right at the heart of the Drupal project’s principles, opening up the best the web can offer to everyone regardless of economics and access to skills.
This ambition reminds me of the early days of Drupal. What’s different today is we are not a handful of developers, we are a community growing over 1.5 million with a wealth of experience and new enthusiasm.
